Love the Airbrush Tans

I consider myself a modern woman. I am a self proclaimed Modern Single Momma, in fact. I love bookstores and yoga mats, Google and You Tube, my journal and my BlackBerry, playgrounds and social networks.

Being a modern woman I strive for that uncanny marriage between inner, spiritual beauty and outer, undeniable sex appeal. The British writer William Hazlitt once said,

“Look up, laugh loud, talk big, keep the color in your cheek and the fire in your eye, adorn your person, maintain your health, your beauty and your animal spirits.”

This week I am taking his order to keep the color in your cheeks as license to visit the tanning salon. Its been an incredibly gray August here in Oregon. It just doesn’t seem entering the Back to School season without a glowing bronze complexion.

If nature can’t give it to me, I know a place that can. I go to Bask in the Sun Tanning in Portland. I’ve been twice for an airbrush tan this summer already. (Its kinda like a Brazilian Wax, once you’ve had it, you love it and find miraculous ways to work it in to your monthly budget*). Stephanie who does the airbrushing at Bask is wonderful. I highly recommend a session or two in the Open Sun bed first because that seemed to help my airbrush tan last longer and give the best sun-kissed look.

I also want to warn you NOT to get a pedicure directly following your airbrush session. This is a no-brainer, but for women who rush around like I do, you might need the reminder. The last time I went in for an airbrush was right before my big trip to visit my Man in Moseley. I was getting all the necessary girly maintenance taken care of– wax, tan, pedicure, hair cut, hair color and I foolishly scheduled my pedicure for the same day as the tan, which wouldn’t have been a problem if the pedicure was in the morning and the tan in the afternoon (you should wait at least 12 hours before you shower or sweat after you get air-brushed). Needless to say soaking my feet in the bath and getting my calves massaged with warm soapy water and lotion did not serve the airbrush tan well at all. I panicked when I saw the results (it kidna looked like I had bronze bikeshorts on on because the color of my legs from my knees up was a dramatically darker color than from my knees down. If I had more time I would have called Bask and told them of my big mistake and I’m sure they would have rushed me back in their for an emergency repair. My plane was taking off in only a couple hours though so I had no choice but to pack more cute jeans in exchange for shorts and skirts, buck it up, and trust the man who said he was in love with me would not care about the mix-matched color of my legs.

At least the top half off me was glowing gorgeous with an all-over tan that rivaled Charlize Theron’s on the red carpet. (There is something to be said for feeling like a celebrity, even if its just from the waist up ;)

Anyways, I can’t wait to make another appointment with Bask this month. This has been the rainiest August in Oregon on record for years and my skin color can testify to it. My Man from Moseley, is making a special trip out to Portland in September and the modern woman in me wants to make sure I’m sporting a delicious sun-goddess complexion as I tour him around all the bookshops and coffee houses around town. Who says one cannot wear birkonstocks with a fake tan? Not me.

Here is to feeling beautiful inside and out!
